Al’s vocabulary

You see I used to work with Al. He was an engineer and he knew everything – basically he was an authority on any given subject and was convinced that the government was out to get everyone and he knew exactly how they were doing it. Oh, and did I mention that he has an MBA, because if I didn’t mention it, I’m sure he would have made sure you left knowing he had it. There were a number of phrases or sayings he would always say, like beginning questions with, “Silly question…”. Or he liked the “Needless to say…” one a lot. One of my favorites was one he didn’t use a lot, but more than any other person I’ve ever know; and I could always see it coming. Sometimes I would say it before he could or say it along with him. The cliche was “All over you like a cheap suit.”

Along with these were some particular vocabulary usages. I created this little image of the ones I could remember. Now some of these might not seem all the weird, but in everyday, casual conversation with Al, it seemed like a little much. I’ll show some examples of how they might have been used:

airplanes=aircraft “That is one fine-tuned aircraft”

computer program=software “SolidWorks is a much more intuitive software than Pro/Engineer”

car=vehicle “My 1999 Dodge Ram has been a very reliable vehicle”

watch=timepiece “Rolex makes a great timepiece”

coins/bills/money=currency “They don’t have enough currency in circulation”

gun=firearms “I plan on purchasing a personal firearm soon”

drink=beverage “I’m going to the vending machines, can I get you a beverage”

Arne Jacobsen – The Number Seven Chair

Arne Jacobsen 1902 - 1970

I came across these two ‘Number Seven Chairs” or sometimes known as “3107” chairs in a online classified ad in Orem, UT. There were two of these black chairs for only $15!! I wanted them, but figured they’d be gone by the time I made it to Orem next. So after the BYU vs SDSU football game my brother and I attended a week later I called up the lady to see if they were still available. To my surprise they were, so we headed over on the way home and picked them up. They’re practically in perfect condition except for a couple minor scratches. They’re really comfortable chairs and an icon in the world of furniture design, designed by Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen in 1955. Some of his other famous pieces include the ‘Swan‘ chair and ‘Egg‘ chair.

Headlamp

One of my headlights went out last week and had to change it. I thought I’d take a photo of the old one, because I think headlamps are some cool looking light bulbs. Maybe it’s the blue glass…Either way, I’m sure some good inspiration can come from these.
